Thousands more refugee children are receiving the best start to their education with the opening of 54 new Kindergartens in Azraq and Za’atari refugee camps as part of UNICEF’s support to the Government of Jordan to achieve universalization of KG2 in Jordan by 2025. 

The new classrooms, built and equipped by UNICEF, will be staffed by 65 new teachers and principals recruited by the Ministry of Education, enabling nearly 4,000 refugee children in both camps to receive quality, equitable preschool education. UNICEF is also supporting the training of KG teachers in inclusive education, so that all children, including those with disabilities, can enroll and realize their right to an education.

“Quality and inclusive preschool gives every child the best start to their education – preparing them for future learning, reducing drop-outs, and improving their overall learning and development,” said Robert Jenkins, Representative, UNICEF Jordan. “UNICEF is working closely with the Ministry of Education to provide quality, inclusive education and safe learning environments for all children in Jordan.”

Evidence from a diverse range of countries is conclusive that investing in early childhood development is an extremely effective and cost-efficient way of accelerating progress for children, their communities and societies more generally. 

Kindergarten can also provide a protective and nurturing environment for refugee children.

			<image:caption><![CDATA[Yasmina* recently fled fighting in Mosul. She is now living in Hamam Al Alill Camp. Her 14 year old brother was killed when an ISIS sniper shot him in the head as government forces encircled their neighbourhood. She now attends Save the Children’s Temporary Learning Space in the camp.

&quot;Before we were in hell and now we are in heaven. Here, I go to the TLS (Temporary Learning Space) everyday. They teach us lessons. I am learning the English alphabet. Today we have a maths test. It is on odd numbers and I have been studying hard. I like it there very much. I want to learn English. 

When I came here I didn’t know anybody. None of my friends were here. Now I have two best friends. I met them at the TLS. I wish I could go there all the time but it is only open for me a few hours each day. It is the best thing in the camp. But there is no where else for us to play. I wish we had a playground with a slide and swings.
