Burundian refugee Nigirabarya Sialeo, 31, is headteacher at Hope Secondary School in Nduta refugee camp, Tanzania. Hope is the only secondary school in the camp. Its walls are crumbling and there is a shortage of teachers. ; Nduta opened in October 2015 as an emergency measure to relocate 40,000 Burundian refugees from Nyarugusu camp. Quickly surpassing its capacity of 50,000 people, the Tanzanian Government extended the camp a year later. Its population numbers 125,000 (as of November 2017) and a programme of voluntary repatriation is in progress. There is a severe lack of indoor classrooms. When it rains, children are sent home. There is currently one teacher for every 200 pupils and no text books, notebooks and minimal school meals. Teachers are paid $22 per month to teach in the mornings and afternoons and mark and prepare in the evenings. Here and in the nearby Nyarugusu and Mtendeli camps, hundreds of additional classrooms are needed, at a cost of $12,000 each. There is also a desperate need for more shelters and a huge funding shortfall. Just 7 per cent of funding for UNHCR’s $217 million appeal to assist Burundian refugees in Tanzania has been received (as of Nov 2017.)]]></image:caption>

“I studied Education for two years at Damascus University before we had to leave with my family. Here, in Jordan, I stayed three and a half years without studying. It was tough. I was hopeless. I volunteered for Mercy Corps in Zaatari refugee camp. Then I received a DAFI scholarship, thank God, but I had to start over because I couldn’t obtain an equivalence of previous studies. I wish to become of teacher at university and a ‘trainer of trainers’, but who knows what is going to happen? Our future is very uncertain at the moment.”

He adds: “Life here is different. Take the physical environment of the camp for instance: the lack of electricity, the houses, the roads, etc. We have had to adjust.”

Ala'a Alhmadi (centre), 22, fled Dara'a, Syria, in March 2013 with her family. They settled in Zaatari camp, Jordan. Ala'a is in her third year of Educational Sciences at nearby Al-Albayt University. She is married and has a 10-month old daughter.

“I was studying media and journalism at Damascus University before the war. Here in Jordan, I spent two years with no access to formal education. I can’t even start to describe how I felt when I received the DAFI scholarship. A year later, I got married and today I am a mother. Perhaps the scholarship was the key to good fortune!” she says.

“For the past three years, I’ve been volunteering for Doctors Without Borders as social researcher and mental health supporter. We are achievers. This is the by-product of our difficult life. It gives us extra motivation.”

“Life in the Zaatari refugee camp is difficult. I hope to complete a master’s degree and perhaps a PhD. My wish is to become a university professor. But I am scared that I might have to stay in this camp, or that I will not be able to obt]]></image:caption>

The Occitanie Pyrénées-Méditerranée region in southern France has teamed up with the Federal University of Toulouse, the University Paul Valery in Montpellier and the Paris-based NGO Olive Branch: Democracy and Mutual Aid in Syria, to offer scholarships for Syrian refugees in Jordan to undertake undergraduate studies. The programme includes one year of intensive French language training, private tuition, a monthly living stipend, housing in a student residence and assistance with visas to enter France. UNHCR assisted in the selection process and administrative procedures. After completing the language course, the students can apply to any field of study at the two participating universities. <image:caption><![CDATA[Hannah fled Syria in 2012. After living in Jordan for five years, she will soon begin studying for a degree at the University Paul Valery in Montpellier on a scholarship granted by the French local authority. ; Young Syrians are getting the chance to study in France thanks to a pioneering assistance programme launched by a regional government and two universities. Scholarships are one of the ways refugees can be resettled in third countries, enhancing their future opportunities.]]></image:caption>

<image:caption><![CDATA[Afghan boys form a 'daisy chain' to attend special English classes at the Greek Oinofyta center in 2016. When the lives of displaced children are disrupted for lengthy periods, humanitarian agencies make special efforts to provide educational facilities. ; When large numbers of people are uprooted from their homes for lengthy periods, education becomes a top priority for their children. In mid-2016 some 55,000 people faced possibly a lengthy and uncertain future in Greece alone, and almost half of them were children. Of those around one fifth had never even set foot in a classroom before.

To introduce or reintroduce children to educational opportunities UNHCR supported quality early learning projects and non formal education opportunities. Armando Aid was one of many organizations promoting learning and helped prepare children to enter a more structured upcoming school year. It held daily classes for 7-12 year olds at the Oinofyta site which housed around 600 displaced persons from Afghanistan, 40% of them boys and girls.]]></image:caption>

Scholarships are one of the ways refugees can be resettled in third countries, enhancing their future opportunities.]]></image:caption>

Scholarships are one of the ways refugees can be resettled in third countries, enhancing their future opportunities.]]></image:caption>
